Opened a Western Digital 2TB (WD20SDZW-59Z3CS0) in our Clean Room. The drive was making beeping sounds which indicates stiction, where the read/write heads get stuck on the platters. Once we opened the drive, we discovered the heads were stuck in a very ugly place (right on the lip of the platters). We were able to safely remove the heads from the platters. After inspecting the heads under a microscope, head 0 and 2 had contamination on them, but it looks like it’s the top coating of the platters and not the actual layer of the platters that carries data. 😌Let’s keep going!
